A List of Rubik's Cube Algorithms for When You Get Stuck

Rubik's cube is a widely popular mechanical puzzle that requires a series of movement sequences, or algorithms, in order to be solved. Many of you have likely watched the tutorial videos that teach you how to solve the cube, but don't know or cannot remember those long, boring algorithms. Therefore, I have created a handy cheat sheet of the algorithms that you can whip out at a moment's notice to solve the Rubik's Cube when you get stuck.

The Basic Movement Notations

Understanding the basic move notations are essential to understanding the algorithms. Each notation designates one of the cube layers that should be turned clockwise 90 degrees (or 1/4 of the way around the cube).

Standard notation for the cube is Up, Down, Right, Left, Face, and Back (U, D, R, L, F, B). These refer to the different layers of the cube. Remember, though, that the notations are all relative and are determined based on the cube's orientation. Face, for instance, refers to the layer that faces you when you hold the cube.

When the notation has an apostrophe (e.g., U'), that means you should move that layer counter-clockwise 90 degrees. See the full list of movement notations below.

This article does not teach you how to solve a Rubik's cube from start to finish.

This is a list of very specific algorithms for specific situations where people commonly get stuck when trying to solve the Rubik's cube. You should already know the basics, and only use these algorithms when you find yourself in the situations presented below.

These are the algorithms that are necessary to solve the Rubik's Cube and the step in the process where they are used. For more detailed information on where and when to use these algorithms, see below.

Important Tip

If you don't arrive at the solution on the first try, continue doing the algorithm over and over again until you get there.

The first step in solving the Rubik's cube is to make the white cross. To match those colors up, perform the following sequence:

F' U L' U'

  1. Front inverse (counter-clockwise 90 degrees)
  2. Up (clockwise 90 degrees)
  3. Left inverse (counter-clockwise 90 degrees)
  4. Up inverse (counter-clockwise 90 degrees).

To get the left corner aligned, use the following algorithm:

  3. Down inverse (counter-clockwise 90 degrees)

Right Corner

To get the right corner, use the following algorithm:

Use the following algorithm to place the edge pieces and to complete the second layer. The side of the cube with the edge piece that needs to be rotated is going to be your Front (F). These algorithms are for two separate cases.

Right Edge-Piece Placement

When you need to move the edge piece to the right:

Left Edge-Piece Placement

When you need to move the edge piece to the left:

4. Getting the White Cross Without Disrupting the Rest of the Cube

To make the white top cross without disturbing the rest of the cube, you should use the following algorithm:

  1. Front (clockwise 90 degrees)
  2. Right (clockwise 90 degrees)
  3. Up (clockwise 90 degrees)
  4. Right Inverse (counter-clockwise 90 degrees)
  5. Up Inverse (counter-clockwise 90 degrees)
  6. Front Inverse (counter-clockwise 90 degrees)

Use the algorithm two times when there is a pattern that looks like an 'L.'

Problem 3

Use the algorithm once when there is a straight horizontal line.

For the following algorithm to work, the third, unsolved layer must be rotated until exactly one of its edges appears to be solved (i.e. it should look like the blue side in the example). This side of the cube (the side that looks exactly like the blue side in the example) should be your Front (F) as you perform the algorithm. You might have to go through the algorithm twice to solve the third layer edges; if this is the case, your Front face should be the same both times.

The following algorithm is used to align the corner pieces in the third layer. The order in which the colours are aligned does not matter. When do this, the side that looks like the red side in the example should be your Face.The algorithm is:

  • Its technically correct, but the last step is misleading, as you must do that algorithm twice instead of once. Then, once that corner is alligned, you rotate only the top layer, placig the next corner in the upper right, and continuing. Needs better explanation.

  • What is perhaps most underestimated is learning the notation, the terms and how to correctly read the various sides. Any misunderstanding of which direction or layer your working on will throw the whole thing off..obviously..awe but is it so obvious?

  • My first time with a Rubik on my hand. How I know what part of the cube is the front and which one is the up. It looks similar. Do I have to use the white center as the Up? if yes, then which color must be the left and which one the right??

  • For the last step you have the cube you want to flip in the top right corner, then do the formula until it is fixed. The rest of the cube will look failed, but wait. Rotate the top layer so the next cube to be flipped is on the top right and repeat. Viola!

  • I've test ran every single Algorithm and attempted to use them all, however it just seems that no matter how much or little effort I put into solving the cube was a failure. So I'm guessing that there are two things that are happening in my current situation. One is being that I just may or may not be able to even comprehend the complexity of these 'simple' Algorithms. I recently got my first sub-5 AO100 with Ortega and some SS, and I told myself once I did that, I'd learn CLL. I could press on, learn some more SS and practice OLL prediction to get sub-4, but I feel like it would be more beneficial to learn CLL. The only problem is I'm really not sure how to approach learning it.

I'm in no rush to learn and am planning on memorizing one, maybe two algs per day, but I'm not sure what to do while I learn them. At this point, I have roughly 30 new algs to learn and can realistically accomplish that in about three weeks, but what do I do in those three weeks?

Should I approach it like learning full OLL for 3x3 and keep doing timed solves while I practice CLL on the side? Or should I put the timer away for three weeks, learn full CLL, then start timing again?

Also, is it best to learn CLL one set at a time? By that I mean is it most efficient to learn the Sune algs, then Antisune, then T, and so on?

Like I said, I'm not in any rush to learn. I just want to make sure I'm approaching this effectively. I'd love to hear from anyone who knows CLL. In particular, I'm interested to know how you learned it, how long it took, and what, if anything, you would do differently if you could relearn it.
